New Episode of Derek Hui's Tokyo Series Tours His Apartment and Platinum Plaque

Derek, life in Tokyo

His Tokyo documentary series walks through the shelf holding his music years: the Music Canada plaque for "Love No More."

TOKYO, JAPAN, October 8, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Tokyo documentary series of Canadian entrepreneur Derek Hui has released an episode, published on 17 September, that tours the Azabujuban apartment he rents and the shelf holding the plaque from his years managing the singer Anders, whose single "Love No More" is certified triple platinum by Music Canada.

On the shelf sits the Music Canada triple-platinum plaque for "Love No More," the 2018 single by the singer Anders in collaboration with Loud Luxury. "Very very cool to be a kid who always dreamed of working in music and then now to have your own platinum plaque, have your own name on it," Hui says in the episode.

"Love No More," released on Armada Music on 31 August 2018, was certified triple platinum by Music Canada and earned gold certifications from ARIA in Australia and Recorded Music NZ. It reached No. 44 on the Canadian Hot 100, No. 98 on the UK Singles Chart, No. 89 on the ARIA chart and No. 23 on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs. Digital Journal reported that the single passed one million streams within two days of release.

The plaque represents a career Hui funded himself. He taught himself photography at 21, spent 12 years behind the camera and founded the Mariner Agency, a Toronto wedding studio that shot more than 400 weddings, 300 of them with Hui behind the camera. Toronto couples marry mostly between May and October, he says in the episode, and the studio's season earnings lasted the rest of the year. "I had time and I had cash from the wedding photography gigs and I decided to reinvest into myself," Hui says in the episode. From age 24 to 31 he managed artists through NSTMGMT, the company he built with William Nguyen, known professionally as Photo Will, backing Anders through the release of "Love No More" and managing Always Never, The Theorist and Aria Ohlsson. The same shelf holds a ceramic oil diffuser he and a business partner designed as their first step into e-commerce, a product he says ultimately failed.

"I've photographed over 400 weddings. Fistfights the night before the ceremony. Best men with black eyes. Brides screaming at their sisters during portraits. But I also saw couples who made you believe love was real. After 400 weddings, the difference between the couples who fell apart and the ones who got it right came down to one thing. It wasn't love. It wasn't money. It wasn't the venue. It was clarity," Hui wrote in April, introducing an episode about the wedding years and the habit he carried from them into music.

Hui stepped back from artist management at 31 and went on to found several e-commerce companies. In March 2023 he spent nine days in Tokyo, knew he wanted to leave Toronto, and moved that October at 34. The apartment tour is one episode of the documentary series he has filmed in the city since, released roughly every two weeks and produced with Tokyo-based editor and videographer Darren Ha.
