EU Launches “AccelerateEU” Plan

(MENAFN) The European Commission has put forward a fresh set of proposed actions designed to lower dependence on imported fossil fuels and tackle increasing energy prices associated with ongoing tensions in the Middle East, according to a press statement released on Wednesday. The initiative, called “AccelerateEU,” argues that Europeans are “paying the price of Europe’s dependency on imported fossil fuels” for the second time in under five years.

The Commission noted that since the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, the European Union has incurred an extra €24 billion (around $25.6 billion) in energy import expenses due to elevated prices, despite no corresponding increase in supply. Officials emphasized that this situation underscores the urgency of speeding up the shift toward cleaner energy sources, framing it as both an economic requirement and a matter of security.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted that the approach is intended to deliver “both immediate and more structural relief measures” while also reinforcing energy autonomy across the bloc. She added, “The choices we make today will shape our ability to face the challenges of today and the crises of tomorrow,” further noting that accelerating the transition to “homegrown, clean energies” would enhance resilience against geopolitical disruptions.

The proposal also outlines coordinated efforts among EU member states regarding gas storage, oil reserves, and fuel supply management. In addition, it suggests establishing a new fuel observatory tasked with tracking fuel flows and stock levels across the European Union.
