Italy’s Meloni Calls for Stronger NATO, Warns Against Internal Divisions

(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called for greater unity within NATO, warning that internal tensions within the alliance are unhelpful, particularly disagreements involving the United States and Spain, according to remarks made Friday.

Speaking to reporters during an informal EU gathering in Greek Cyprus, Meloni stressed the need to reinforce NATO rather than allow divisions to deepen. “I don't see tensions over NATO as positive; they need to be strengthened,” she said.

She also emphasized the importance of developing the European dimension of the alliance while maintaining its transatlantic structure. “I believe we need to work to strengthen NATO, to strengthen the European pillar of the alliance, a European pillar that must be complementary,” she added.

As stated by reports, her comments come amid ongoing debates among NATO members over defense spending levels and how responsibilities should be shared, alongside broader differences in national priorities.

Meloni reiterated that strengthening unity within NATO should remain a central objective, especially given current security pressures facing Europe.

On relations with the United States, she said cooperation remains stable despite occasional disagreements. “I haven’t spoken to Donald Trump, but relations with the US are always solid,” she said.

She also addressed defense budgets, noting that while military investment is important, governments must also consider other urgent issues. “Defense spending remains important, but if we have the energy problem, you understand that there’s a priority that unfortunately comes first,” she said, adding that policy decisions must adapt to evolving circumstances.
