US-Sanctioned Tanker Movement Adds to Disruption in Strait of Hormuz

Tracking information indicated that the very large crude carrier Yuri was positioned close to Iran’s Larak Island after it had moved toward the strait late Thursday and passed by the island. These movements were recorded through ship-monitoring data systems.
In contrast, a semi-official Iranian outlet, reported a different account, stating that the tanker had already successfully crossed the strait and was anchored to the east of Larak Island.
The Yuri had previously been placed under US sanctions in 2024 due to its involvement in the transportation of Iranian oil shipments.
According to statements shared by US Central Command on the social media platform X, 33 vessels have been diverted since the beginning of what it described as a US naval blockade.
Simultaneously, Iranian authorities have increased their enforcement presence over the waterway. Reports have emerged of commercial ships being targeted, including instances of gunfire, and at least two vessels have reportedly been detained.
These combined actions from both sides have significantly reduced maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which is widely regarded as one of the most vital global energy shipping routes.
Separately, a bulk cargo ship that had delivered food supplies to Iran was also observed heading toward the strait near the Yuri on Thursday. However, it later reversed course and returned into the Persian Gulf instead of continuing forward.
