Bangladesh Reports Rising Measles Death Toll

(MENAFN) Bangladesh has reported a further rise in measles-related deaths, with seven additional fatalities recorded on Friday, bringing the total to 240 since mid-March, according to the Health Ministry.

As stated by reports, the number of confirmed infections has now exceeded 29,500 since March 15. Health authorities also recorded nearly 1,400 new cases within a single 24-hour period, based on data from the Directorate General of Health Services.

Officials are currently contending with a significant shortage of diagnostic kits needed to test for the disease, further complicating response efforts.

According to an assessment released by the World Health Organization, cases have been identified in 58 of the country’s 64 districts—representing about 91% nationwide—indicating what it described as “widespread transmission nationally.” The majority of infections, approximately 79%, have been reported among children under the age of five.

The capital, Dhaka, has emerged as the most affected area, with particularly high case numbers in densely populated informal settlements.

In response, the government recently launched a targeted vaccination drive aimed at children between 6 and 59 months of age.

According to reports, Bangladesh had previously made notable progress toward eliminating measles. However, setbacks in immunization coverage have been linked to vaccine shortages between 2024 and 2025, as well as gaps in routine immunization and the lack of nationwide supplementary measles-rubella campaigns since 2020.
