Iran to Shut Hormuz Until US Abandons Naval Blockade

(MENAFN) Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy announced Saturday that it was closing the Strait of Hormuz effective that afternoon, conditioning its reopening on a full US withdrawal of its naval blockade on Iranian vessels and ports.

In a statement broadcast by a state-run TV, the IRGC Navy dismissed US President Donald Trump's recent remarks about the strategic waterway, declaring they "have no credibility."

The IRGC noted that following an earlier Iranian declaration permitting civilian ships to transit the passage, a number of vessels had done so "with the coordination of the IRGC Navy." But Tehran accused Washington of failing to uphold its end of a ceasefire agreement.

"However, in violation of the ceasefire agreement, the American enemy has not lifted the naval blockade on Iranian vessels and ports, so the Strait of Hormuz will be closed from this afternoon until the blockade is lifted," the statement read.

The IRGC issued a stark warning to all maritime traffic in the region, cautioning that "no vessel of any kind should move from its anchorage in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman," and declaring that any approach toward the strait would be treated as "cooperation with the enemy."

In its most severe warning, the IRGC stated that any vessel defying the order "will be targeted."

Washington had not issued any immediate response to the announcement at the time of publication.
