UNRWA Chief Warns of “New Blow Against International Law” in West Bank

(MENAFN) Fresh Israeli actions in the occupied West Bank represent “a new blow against international law,” according to the leader of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The agency’s commissioner-general, Philippe Lazzarini, stated that the latest policies clear the path for “accelerated settlement expansion” while further eroding future prospects for Palestinians.

In a message posted late Tuesday on the US-based social networking site X, Lazzarini cautioned that “The measures amount to a recipe for increased control, hopelessness and violence.”

He emphasized that such actions establish troubling precedents that could carry repercussions beyond the region, potentially affecting the broader international landscape.

His comments followed a decision by Israel’s Security Cabinet on Sunday to endorse a series of steps intended to modify the legal and administrative structure governing the occupied West Bank. The changes are designed to reinforce what critics describe as unlawful Israeli authority in the territory.

As reported by Israeli media, the approved steps involve rescinding legislation that previously prohibited the transfer of West Bank land to private Israeli citizens, opening sealed property ownership archives, and transferring jurisdiction over construction approvals in a settlement cluster near Hebron from a Palestinian local authority to Israel’s civil administration.
